Cities could play key role in pollinator conservation

Cities could play an important role in conserving pollinators, according to a new study.  The research, involving scientists at the University of Leeds, has revealed that urban gardens and allotments are good for pollinators, and lavender and borage are important garden plants that pollinators use as food sources.

Leeds City Council's executive board has given approval for an updated Local Flood Risk Management Strategy for the city as the third anniversary of Storm Eva passes. Work being carried out and planned to reduce the threat posed by flooding across Leeds will now go out for consultation

Leeds businesses to get practical support to develop and secure funding for low carbon projects

Businesses in Leeds are being supported to go low carbon through a series of workshops to develop and finance new projects. The capacity building workshops will be introduced at a Board Level Briefing on 29 January at Merrion House in Leeds. The briefing, which is for decision makers with responsibility for medium sized companies, will explain how low-carbon projects can be profitable and give examples of businesses that have already benefitted.

Leeds puts climate messages in lights

A social media campaign that put people's thoughts about climate change in lights was used to engage the public in the run up to, and during Green GB Week (15-19 October 2018).

The #MyClimate Twitter campaign asked people to respond to the question, "What does climate change mean to you?" in words of nine characters or less.

Northern surveys show high levels of concern about climate change

Public concern about climate change appears to be on the rise, according to a survey on climate solutions carried out by a group of universities in the north of England during Green GB Week.

The survey, produced by the Priestley International Centre for Climate, was conducted using face to face interviews at Leeds Station as well as in York, Newcastle and Manchester simultaneously.

Climate Question Time at Leeds Civic Hall

Over 100 people packed out Leeds Civic Hall for Climate Question Time, a keynote event in the north for Green GB Week (15-19 October 2018).

The event, hosted by Leeds Climate Commission with the Priestley International Centre for Climate at the University of Leeds and the Centre for Climate Change Economics and Policy, was held in the council chamber on Tuesday 16 October. 

Council to lead the way in switch to zero emission electric vehicles

Leeds City Council have begun to replace more than 50 of their existing fleet with cleaner, greener electric vehicles.

The 51 new zero-emission Nissan vans mean that the council will have 95 electric vehicles (EVs) in total—more than any other local authority in the country at present. 

University of Leeds pledges to go plastic free

The University of Leeds and Leeds University Union have together pledged to become single-use plastic-free by 2023.

Single-use plastic items are designed to be used only once before they are thrown away or recycled.

The campaign, Single Out: 2023PlasticFree, crucially commits the University and Union to phase out single-use plastic across the board, not just in catering and office spaces.
