Arup
Community heating scheme
Arup is working with clients to shape a better world through the efficient, affordable and sustainable sourcing of energy, its dispatch and use. From renewables to oil and gas, power to nuclear, distributed energy to energy networks - our global experience paired local knowledge allows us to provide advice as well as innovation through excellence for our clients.
Arup’s work with Leeds City Council on a £2million community heating scheme is testament to this. Our team supported the commissioning of the scheme, which served two new residential towers and sheltered accommodation for the elderly. We helped the Council secure over £750,000 in Energy Company Obligation (ECO) and European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) funding, as well as undertaking Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) applications.
This project has allowed the Council ownership of local energy generation in the form of biomass boilers and has also helped reduce their carbon emissions by 84%. Energy bills have also been reduced by 10% by replacing electric heaters for efficient heating systems with lower tariffs, benefitting elderly tenants in an area of fuel poverty.
